New Apprenticeship to Develop Skilled Coaches

The National Horseracing College (NHC) is encouraging equestrian employers across England to consider a new apprenticeship programme designed to develop skilled coaches within their existing workforce.

And importantly, you do not need to be a racing yard to take part.

Suitable for riding schools, livery yards, competition yards and other equestrian businesses, the Level 2 Equine Coaching Apprenticeship allows staff to remain fully employed while learning on the job.

While also helping employers improve coaching standards with minimal disruption to daily operations.

Government funding is available for apprenticeships, with incentives of up to £1,000 for eligible employers, making it a cost-effective way for yards to invest in staff development and retention.

The apprenticeship provides structured, long-term development rather than a short course, helping staff build confidence and coaching skills over time.

Employers can benefit from improved coaching consistency, stronger staff engagement and a clearer progression pathway for employees.

Importantly, although the apprenticeship is delivered by the National Horseracing College, it is open to individuals from all equine disciplines.

With full funding available for many learners, we hope this will make professional development and career progression more accessible to people across the industry, while also helping employers develop skilled, knowledgeable and confident members of staff.”

Course content includes:

  • Planning and delivering coaching sessions
  • Coaching riders of varying abilities
  • Health and safety and risk assessment
  • Safeguarding and duty of care
  • Inclusive coaching practices
  • Professional standards and reflective practice

The programme is open to individuals employed in England who work a minimum of 30 hours per week and are either currently coaching or ready to begin coaching as part of their role.

The apprenticeship starts with a four-day in-person event at the National Horseracing College in Doncaster from 8–11 June 2026.

This is the only required attendance outside the workplace.
